To make the story short, one could simply say that the Boys Brigade is really the Boy Scouts and that Methodism formed the Epworth Guards for the same reason it formed the Epworth League – to create an organization.
The Epworth Wesleyan Circuit contributed £ towards the cost. Methodism in the Epworth area had several divergent strands. The Wesleyan Society had close links to John Wesley's teachings, but there was also a Primitive Methodist Society and a Methodist New Connexion congregation, each of which maintained its own place of worship.

March Sermon Series: Hours That Changed the World LENT begins with Ash Wednesday. The day marks the beginning of a period of reflection and penance. In the Bible, sprinkling oneself with ashes was traditionally a sign of one’s sorrow for having committed sins.
In the Christian tradition, Ash Wednesday also marked the beginning. Since Methodism was a movement within the Church of England, it was intended that, by-and-large, the sacraments of Baptism and Holy Communion would be received in Church, not in the Methodist chapels.
